I Corinthians 10:1-22
It is terrifying to think that the Israelites “drank from the spiritual Rock … Christ,” and yet God was not pleased with them (verses 4-5). With what will I please God, if not Christ? I have no merit of my own, and indeed great sin. I must subsist only on the security that Christ “lost not one,” (John 17:12). From that verse in John, though, we find that Christ “lost” the “son of perdition.” So if I am to have salvation, I must continue in Christ, bearing good fruit, instead of “thorns and thistles (Hebrews 6:8).
II Chronicles 25
It’s always crazy to me when I read of yet another king of Judah who not only acts a fool but disdains counsel when the LORD sends it. Amaziah fits the bill here, certainly. It seems like eventually the kings of Judah would get a little more risk-averse as far as provoking the LORD!
II Chronicles 26
The great king Uzziah, even, angers the LORD with his pride and then gets angry when the priests resist him. It is somewhat comforting to me that God does not strike Uzziah with leprosy when the king begins to sinfully burn incense, but only when he becomes angry at the priests’ rebuke. God does not seem to be out looking for someone to trip up, and there is always a priest or a prophet to bring the Word. But kick against that word, and it is not well with you!
II Chronicles 27
[Jotham] did what was right in the eyes of the LORD according to all that his father Uzziah had done, except that he did not enter the temple of the LORD.
II Chronicles 27:2
He follows his father in following the LORD, but does not follow his father into the sin of pride. My prayer for my children tonight: that they will follow me as I follow Christ (I Corinthians 11:1), but not in my sin or my pride.
So Jotham became mighty, because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God.
II Chronicles 27:6
LORD, please teach my children to order their ways before you — and make them mighty.
II Chronicles 28
Any time I am tempted (especially when I am tempted to judge others) I should remember Oded the prophet along with Azariah, Berechiah, Jehizkiah, and Amasa.
… For our guilt is already great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.
II Chronicles 28:13
Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah… like whiplash.
