Take Heed

Colossians 4:17 is an exhortation from Paul to Archippus, but it’s valid for each one of us:

Take heed of the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.

I wish it was rendered with an exclamation point! How painful it will be on judgment day if the Lord of Hosts says to me, “Stick! You wasted your ministry! You received it from Me and you didn’t fulfill it!”

Now, I know that God doesn’t need me (Romans 11:34-36), but He desires that I work for Him, that I minister on His behalf to His people (John 21:15-17). “Do you love me?” “Tend my lambs.”

I wonder what I’d do if someone told me, “Take heed of the destiny you’ve received from God, and go win the Super Bowl!” What if they said, “Take heed of your destiny, and go cure cancer!” Maybe, “Take heed of your destiny and visit the Moon!” I’d be pumped - I’d want to go out and fulfill that! Those things are all really cool and awesome - and temporal. We all know that the temporal won’t matter a thousand (or ten thousand) years from today, but the eternal will. God expects each one of us to take heed of an eternal ministry - of the destiny of sharing His love, of being His love to the world. It’s even more awesome than being the highest-paid player in sports or inventing the internet. Regardless of what you do, you have a ministry to fulfill. You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

I don’t care who you are, God wants your life (Romans 12:1) for His glory. That’s your ministry. Take heed, and fulfill it!
