An Apple Pie From Scratch

I recently rediscovered Carl Sagan’s Cosmos when the video below was posted to Slashdot. I had forgotten how awesome the Cosmos series was. One of the best lines in Cosmos, I think, is in the very beginning of this video….

If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.

It reminds me of God’s words to Job in Job 38:4-11.

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding,
Who set its measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the line on it?
On what were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
When the morning stars sang together
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Or who enclosed the sea with doors
When, bursting forth, it went out from the womb;
When I made a cloud its garment
And thick darkness its swaddling band,
And I placed boundaries on it
And set a bolt and doors,
And I said, ‘Thus far you shall come, but no farther;
And here shall your proud waves stop’?

We are nothing without the Lord our Creator. We can make an apple pie from scratch simply because He first created (invented!) the universe. And in the vastness of that universe, how small a thing we are! One hundred billion galaxies, each with one hundred billion suns, and yet the Lord cares for man (Psalm 8:4). That is incredible to me. With all the glory of the stars, nebulae, galaxies….

The orange background of this website is from the Hubble telescope (if I remember right). If you want to be amazed at the glory of God portrayed in the cosmos, head over to their site and look through the gallery. It’s unbelievable, and it’s only a tiny portion of the vastness of what we can’t even fathom out there. God created the whole glory of the universe, beautiful and vast beyond measure.

And yet God loves us. He created all this, and we can give nothing back to Him, and yet God loves us. How amazing.
