Philemon 1 §

Paul writes this letter to Philemon, Apphia, Archippus, and the church in their house (verses 1-2). I wonder what their relationship is, that the three of them share a house? In any case, Philemon gets all the credit — I’ve never noticed the other names here before.

I also find it interesting that here again is a church “in [their] house,” again meaning a congregation that meets in their house. How does the early church decide who will meet where? Is it geographic? Is it based on relational networks? Is it professional? Some mix of the three?

and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.

Philemon 1:6

On first reading I wondered who they were sharing their faith with, and whose knowledge it meant. The interlinear leads me to think that the sharing of faith within their church would lead to a full understanding of God’s love, shown through each other (John 13:35).

Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.

Philemon 1:20

Bold. How often do we ask (demand?) our brothers and sisters in Christ to refresh us? To work for our benefit? How often do we do that for them? Do we structure our relationships around benefiting one another (Philippians 2:3) and refreshing one another in Christ?

Jeremiah 10 §

Whatever is made by even the most skillful of humans is still just a reworking of materials imagined and created by the living God. Whatever wisdom or power exists in humanity is insignificant next to His.

For the shepherds are stupid and do not inquire of the LORD;
therefore they have not prospered, and their flock is scattered.

Jeremiah 10:21

Pastors, take notice.

Correct me, O LORD, but in justice;
not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.

Jeremiah 10:24

This must be my prayer for every day of my sanctification.
